Minutes 12032013

From Plnwiki

  • The call opened with some background & setup for these new monthly calls
    • These calls are building off of regular calls that MetaArchive, COPPULL & the Belgium PLN have had in 2013 about technical topics
    • At the PLN meeting in Montgomery, Alabama (October 2013) the community agreed that these calls could be expanded to welcome all the PLNs and any other interested PLN participants
    • The goal is to provide an outlet for community updates & connections
    • These calls are intended to be very informal
    • The PLN wiki (http://plnwiki.lockss.org/wiki/index.php/Main_Page) will be this group’s workspace and is shaping up to be a primary documentation hub for getting familiar with how LOCKSS and PLNs work
  • Matt Schultz (MetaArchive) invited reps from some of the PLNs who joined the call to provide some updates on their development and interests for these calls
    • Adam Rusbridge (UK LOCKSS Alliance) mentioned that their PLN has been:
      • focusing on subscription content and open access content;
      • doing development work on the LOCKSS user interface;
      • experimenting with content display;
      • investigating monitoring of collections via the LOCKSS API;
      • looking into disaster recovery using OAI-ORE;
      • building SOLR indexes; and
      • exploring preservation for special collections content
    • James Jacobs (US Gov Docs) mentioned that their PLN has been:
      • also investigating content access;
      • working with the FCC to get content into FDSYS;
      • stumping for LOCKSS given the US gov’t shutdown; and
      • negotiating with ProQuest regarding database content
    • Tim Au Yeung (Synergies) mentioned that their PLN is currently undergoing re-evaluation of strategic directions
  • The conversation turned to follow-up on the forthcoming improvements to the LOCKSS API for accessing DaemonStatus and other information currently queried through the UI
    • Tom Lipkis (LOCKSS) said that this is still a couple releases away but coming very soon
    • Mark Jordan (COPPUL) has been very interested in this improved API - UK LOCKSS Alliance is also very interested - as is MetaArchive
  • Conversation turned to best workflows to get these new features documented
    • The group agreed that use cases & implementations should be co-documented by the PLNs and Tom Lipkis (LOCKSS)
    • Best approach is for the PLNs to carve out a space (page or sub-page) on the wiki and solicit Tom’s assistance documenting the topic/issue - Tom can drop in and fill in gaps in information and provide accuracy & context
    • It was also suggested and agreed upon to have the PLNs send Tom write-ups/descriptions from previous trouble-shooting correspondence (e.g., emails) - these can be curated to form the basis for wiki documentation
  • Aaron Trehub (ADPNet & MetaArchive) asked if we could get the PLN wiki linked to from the Communities page on www.lockss.org (http://www.lockss.org/community/).
    • James Jacobs said he would look into the possibilities
  • The group agreed to meet monthly going forward the 1st Tuesday of each month at 12pm ET
    • The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, January 7th at 12pm ET on WebEx (call-in info forthcoming on the PLN listserv)
  • To-Dos
    • PLN reps should alert the listserv if and when they update or add information to the wiki
    • If you would like to follow-up with somebody from the call but don’t have their contact just ask for their email via the listserv - they can reply directly off-list
